For decades the trails within the reserves of Nilumbik Shire have been used by horse riders, walkers, and more recently by mountain bike riders.
These informal trails have remained in good shape despite little active management by council. Now we al have an opportunity to proactively take part in preserving these important trails for generations to come.
Horse riders have historicaly ridden 9 main off road trails within the Panton Hill Bushland Reserve System, but this is now under threat. Nillumbik Shire Council is developing a management plan that will restrict horse riding to only 3 of those 9 trails.
We, the undersigned SUPPORT the horse riders of Nillumbik in their fight to protect their right to ride in the Panton Hill Bushland Reserve System.
We may never ourselves visit or ride in the system HOWEVER as horse riders from all over Victoria and Australia we support the right to protect safe and sustainable trails across the country.
The move by Nillumbik Shire Council to restrict horse riding to a pitiable section of the trails will put ALL riders in the area at risk and will set a precedent for other councils to follow which could push riders around the state onto busy roads risking themselves and other road users.
As such, we, the understand request the the Nillumbik Shire Council review their decision allow Nillumbik resident horse riders continued access to 5 of the 9 trails the community have historicaly used.
Please amend the Draft Panton Hill Bushland Reserve System Management Plan to keep the folowing trails: 1 in Yirrip Reserve, 2 in Bunjil Reserve, 1 along the edge of Wimbi Reserve and 1 in Bulwidj Reserve.
This is in accordance with research and historically sustainable practice.
