From January 1st 2011 (yes we are already behind the 8 ball) until Dec 31 2030 Baby Boomers will turn 65 at the rate of 10,000 a day!
Mainline Protestant Denominations have been educating seminarians on how to bring in people age 18 to 35 since the 1950's and they are still not filling churches with that age group.
Do we stop attempting to minister to the 18-35 year old's NO, but we do equip our future clergy members on how to do ministry with the newly retired, the senior citizen, and the medically frail generations that are in their churches!
When asked about classes on how to best work with and serve these populations a Drew employee offered the answer "Oh we do offer a class on death and dying." The textbook that is used for that class was written by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross MD with the original copyright date of 1969. Long enough ago that this particular second career seminarian used the book as a senior in High School, and I am only one year too young to be considered a baby boomer!
We the undersigned are in agreement that a to provide a seminarian with the tools needed to effectively lead, inspire, teach, and minister to congregations in the 21st century, a Theological School must offer elective courses on how to be in ministry with and how to minister to people over age the age of 55.
We come to this agreement based on the fact that a current Seminary Student will be expected to effectively make disciples of at least 3 if not 4 generations of people who fall into this category.
