Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans experience sudden cardiac arrest, and immediate CPR can double or even triple survival rates. According to the American Heart Association (2023), fewer than half of bystanders feel prepared to help in an emergency, often due to lack of basic training.
At IUSB, our students represent future teachers, healthcare workers, business leaders, and community members — all of whom may someday face an emergency where a few minutes of action could save a life. Implementing a CPR and first aid certification requirement before graduation would ensure every graduate leaves campus with essential, life-saving skills and the confidence to respond effectively in critical moments.

This initiative would align IUSB with national health and safety priorities, enhance campus preparedness, and strengthen the university’s commitment to community well-being.

We, the undersigned, call on Indiana University South Bend Administration and the Academic Senate to require all undergraduate students to complete CPR and First Aid certification prior to graduation.

This requirement can be fulfilled through brief, low-cost courses offered by the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, or equivalent certified programs, and could be integrated into existing first-year experience, wellness, or elective courses.

By adopting this policy, IUSB would take a proactive step toward fostering a safer, more prepared, and compassionate community — where every graduate has the ability to save a life.
