Hydraulic fracturing (commonly known as fracking) involves injecting harmful chemicals into the ground to break up rock. It has been linked to earthquakes, to which companies and government panels have just turned a blind eye. It also uses significant amounts of water, which have to be transported to the area at great environmental cost, and pollutes groundwater with carcinogenic chemicals. The practice and promotion of fracking serves to steer the future away from sustainable, environmentally friendly energy sources, and makes our societies even more dependent upon nonrenewable fossil fuels. As protesters at Little Plumpton in Lancashire said on October 20, 2018, "fossil fuels [have] no place in a modern-day energy strategy." Though it is less expensive financially, the costs to the environment and health of the world are far too great to continue fracking.
We, the undersigned, feel that hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking, is unsafe, and detrimental to the health of the environment and the world.
We ask you to take steps away from fossil fuels, and closer to a future of green, sustainable energy.
We call on the UN to eliminate, and make punishable by law, the process and practice of hydraulic fracturing.
