In 2013 the rates for obesity in the Coconino County was 21%, 1 in 5 adults are obese, However, the Native American community within Arizona has an obesity rate of 80%!
This statistic is alarming as the leading cause of death is cardiovascular disease, obesity being a precursor, and should be addressed. Page, AZ is approximately 34% Native American/American Indian.
With a majority of the population susceptible to becoming obese, which can lead to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and liver problems a recreation center in Page, AZ is a viable option to combat this epidemic. With funding available in the General Fund (Page, AZ), unrestricted funds 20,000,000$ (Page, AZ), help from the county (Coconino County), state (Arizona), tribe (Navajo Nation), and federal government (USA) a recreation center is palpable.
We, the undersigned, call on the City of Page government to acknowledge the lack of reliable health facilities and thereby call into action a strategy to combat the obesity/diabetes epidemic in Page and the nearby area.
We petition that this matter be placed on the City Council Agenda for the meeting scheduled for May 25, 2016.
We ask that council take into strong consideration the construction of a brand new, technologically advanced, reliable, aquatic pool included, public recreation center for the betterment of its' citizens lives, health, mental well-being, and community involvement.
