TORONTO - Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty insisted Tuesday that his duty to voters trumps his obligations to the Catholic church and Pope Benedict XVI, who has suggested that politicians who support abortion rights should be excommunicated.
"There are very few political leaders who would allow all of their actions to be informed exclusively by dictates of the church," McGuinty, who is both Catholic and pro-choice, told reporters when asked about the Pope's remarks.
"I have a different constituency than does the Pope. I am responsible for representing all kinds of people from all kinds of different backgrounds, different faiths, different cultures, different traditions."

Premier Dalton McGuinty rejects the right to life for unborn children and the authority of the Church.
We, the undersigned, ask that the Bishops of Ontario make it explicitly clear to the faithful that all Catholics, even if they are elected officials, may not speak or act against the right to life of unborn children, and that the faithful must make the right to life for unborn children the top priority when voting.
We also ask that Catholic public officials who speak or act against the Faith be made to suffer a negative consequence for their actions so that the faithful understand the gravity of their behaviour.

Nous, sous-signés, demandons aux évêques de l’Ontario d’exprimer clairement aux fidèles que tous les catholiques, même les élus, ne doivent pas parler ou agir contre le droit à la vie des enfants à naître; et que les fidèles doivent considérer le droit à la vie des enfants à naître la priorité la plus importante lorsqu’ils votent.
Nous demandons aussi que les élus catholiques qui parlent ou agissent contre la foi subissent une conséquence négative pour leurs gestes pour que les fidèles comprennent la gravité de leur comportement.
