Allow display of sculptures commemorating the June 4th event of 1989

We, the undersigned, wish to express the following regarding the matter over the display of sculptures commemorating the June 4th event of 1989:
(1) The University is a public educational institution that ought to respect freedom of expression, which is considered to be universal and is also protected in the Basic Law of Hong Kong SAR.
(2) The display of the sculptures commemorating the June 4th event of 1989 is an exercise of such freedom of expression.
(3) The University would not be deemed to have taken any political stance by allowing the students to display the sculptures.
(4) The University would simply be facilitating the exercise of freedom of expression by allowing the students to display the sculptures.
(5) By not allowing the students to display the sculptures, the University would be suppressing the exercise of freedom of expression, and would be acting contrary to what a public educational institution should do, and also acting contrary to the spirit of the Basic Law.

茲就香港中文大學學生會申請擺放「六四」事件紀念雕像一事，我們以聯署方式發布聲明如下：
(1) 言論自由之重要，舉世認同，且為基本法賦予港人之權利，香港中文大學乃公共教育機構，理應尊重言論自由。
(2) 擺放「六四」事件紀念雕像一事，乃言論自由之表達。
(3) 校方若允許擺放雕像，此決定本身並不牽涉任何政治立場。
(4) 校方若允許申請，實有助促進言論自由。
(5) 校方禁止學生擺放雕像，無異於打擊言論自由，公然背離公共教育機構之宗旨，更有違基本法之精神。
