- Australia
The rest of the world is far ahead in the electric car game. Neither Government nor car companies are pushing hard to get electric cars into Australia.
Subsidising Electric cars is one way to accelerate electric car growth and make our roads pollution free.
After 2015 supplies of oil and gas would no longer keep up with demand. – Quote from the CEO of Shell in 2008.
With rising fuel costs and talk of carbon emission reduction dominating news headlines these days, the time for electric cars is fast approaching. As we near Peak Oil, the point on the bell curve at which global oil production is at its maximum, we will be facing a new oil crisis greater than the one faced in 2008 when a barrel of oil reached US $147. This would mean petrol prices of more than $3 per litre for you.
Think about this. What was the Iraq War about? It was about the preservation of Iraqi Oil Fields. Thousands of soldiers were injured or killed during this war, and all with the aim of protecting oil fields. Halliburton obtaining US$7 billion in oil contracts in Iraq evidenced this. A question to think about is, if we were to spend the money on battery development, we would have saved quite a number of lives while also introducing an emission free alternative energy technology.
Battery technology has come a long way, from these early designs of EV. We now have this (Mitsubishi, Nissan-Renault, Audi). Questions have been raised regarding the waste introduced in the production of EV. However, recent studies by MIT and Argonne National Laboratory stated that 75% of all hybrid and internal combustion vehicle energy use comes from the operation of the vehicle. The rest comes mostly from producing the fuels and the manufacture and disposal of the vehicle and its materials.
People have also talked about the production of electricity using coal. Australia produces 80% of its electricity from coal. A study done in the US compared different states of America and the impact of introducing EV on pollution. In California where over half the pollution comes from petrol vehicles, introducing EV would reduce CO2 by 80%, even though it is producing half its energy from coal. A similar study for Northeastern States of America, where electricity is mainly produced from coal, introducing EVs would reduced greenhouse gases such as CO2 by as much as 60%.
EVs result in significant reductions of carbon monoxide, greenhouse gases, and
ground level ozone in the region with magnitudes cleaner than even the cleanest ULEV
Israel (tax breaks), UK (STG 5,000), Denmark (parking) and America governments have supported the EV industry by introducing charging stations and subsidies. So why can’t the Australian government?
The government is committed to reducing pollution, but has been reluctant to ratify the Kyoto treaty, the Copenhagen accord was seen as a non-outcome as well. The government now has an opportunity to step in and do something right by introducing a subsidy for EV buyers. The technology is now available and the time is right for Australia to take up EVs.. So Let them know by signing this petition.
Performance
So we know the question that comes to mind is, how well do electric cars perform? I’m not talking about the Hybrid cars like the Prius or Honda Insight driven by the cardigan bridge.
The electric cars of today have incredible styling to match fast acceleration given by the constant torque applied to electric engines. The Tesla Roadster is an electric sports car that can reach 100 km/h in 4 seconds
With EV the trade off against petrol vehicles is top speed and range - however we feel that Australia provides an ideal environment given our NSW legal speed limit of 110 kmph
The bulk of Australians living in urban areas makes us a suitable country to adopt EV technology with a range that can take us halfway to Canberra.
Future infrastructure will provide us with even more options such as modular replaceable battery packs , solar recharge kits, and even roadside assistance for emergencies
Our electrical supply of 220V provides another strong advantage - quicker charge times compared to 110V nations like Japan and the US. Production EV’s can build up an 80% charge within the hour and 440V infrastructure will help cut this down to 30 min recharge times.
Cost Effectiveness
Electric motors are very efficient, converting over 90% of electrical power supplied into motion, while gasoline engines manage only 20% efficiency.
The Renewable Energy Vehicle project at UWA captured results where the Hyundai Getz can achieve as little as $1.40 per 100 km – compared to $10 for an equivalent sized petrol engine.
The current premiums we see on EVs arise from the cost of batteries, and we believe like your mobile phone, improvements in technology will lower the price and extend the range of your battery over time.
A Petition for Change
Understandably – the biggest barrier for many of us is the initial price of an electric vehicle.
As early adopters – our aim is to petition the government to subsidise this important revolution
What we need is for you to join our cause in making a public commitment towards a cost effective solution for a greener environment.. Let them know you want this change.
Like the First Home Owners Grant, Solar Panel rebate, or LPG conversion rebate we see the government as an important enabler of social change.
Today you have received an important email calling you to action to take part in this exciting change.
Ladies and gentlemen, in this email you will find a link to our petition to lobby for this change.
We know you are busy and excited about this change - yet we do not stand here today to ask you to write to your local MP, we do not ask you to take to the streets to protest or to donate us funds.
Instead we are here to seek your vote to make this change by signing our online petition, through your iphone, on your laptop or when you return home tonight. Let them know.
The results of the petition, your call to action, is to allow us to campaign with government Minister for the Environment Penny Wong, to campaign with environmental groups, to reach out to car makers to Let Them Know there is a public demand in Australia for EV.
So please get online today and sign our petition to let them know.
There are lots of things excites me about these electric car like not having to sit at traffic lights for minutes after lights turned green.
Not having to stop a few minutes for fuel on your way to work (We know how precious those minutes are in the morning)
Not having to spend extra to reach 30 dollars for another 4 cent fuel voucher
Not having to queue at petrol stations on Tuesdays. Btw, we spend 17 days and nights in a life time at petrol stations.
So who’s stopping from putting yourself in the driver seat of these cars. You know who that is..Lazy Government, Greedy oil companies and automakers. But our social responsibility doesn't let us keep quite. We need to let them know.
This action of yours today is going send a wakeup call to the entire nation of Australia to remind the government of their election promise to act on the environment.
I have a dream of city centres of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane pollution free
I have a dream waling in the inner cities breathing fresh air like being in the bush.
I have a dream of our future generations without inhalers in their school bags.
I don’t want our kids and grandkids to battle with childhood asthma
I am very sure all of us here share my dream because I am very sure you have similar dreams.
You can make a difference by signing up today. You can make this dream come true...
Guys, we don’t have lot of time in our hands. If we don’t act now and continue to drive our petrol powered V6s and V8s, very soon
The Petrol price will go over 3 dollars a litre. To be precise, One of the big oil company predicts that petrol prices will be around $3.34 a litre some time during this decade.
Smoky City Centers, and war continues today Iraq, tomorrow don't know. One day the petrol is going to run out...
Please take a step and act now. Let them know that we want the change..
Electric cars have been available in the US and Europe for some time. Israel, Denmark, the UK and the US have all supported the Electric Vehicle industry through subsidies and infrastructure. Sign our petition to let the Australian government know that you wonder why they haven’t done the same. Israel is already building electric chargers in its standard petrol stations. But Australia is being left behind. You are being left behind. Our government is turning a blind eye to the success that electric car technology is having in the rest of the world. Our politicians are hoping you won’t notice. But now you have noticed. And you can let them know. Let our government know by signing this petition. Let those politicians know that you want your next car to be electric. I’ve signed the petition and so should you. Let those automakers know that Australia is not prepared to be left behind. The technology has been proven. Let them know that you want government support and subsidies for electric vehicles. Let your family and friends know that you want Australia to charge ahead with electric transportation.
Act now to free yourself from the choking grip that petrol has on your life. Despite the countless deaths defending oilfields in Iraq, the pollution and smog suffocating the world and the disgust I feel when an oil tanker spill covers marine life in black ooze, it doesn’t have to be that way. Let them know that you want to breathe easy in a world free from car exhaust. Let them know that you care about the health of your kids and their kids. Let them know that you are sick of being denied access to fast, powerful and cost effective transportation that electric vehicles provide. Sign that petition and let them know.
It has never been easier to let them know that electric vehicles are the way to go.
