AUSTRALIA CAN DO MUCH BETTER.
The death of Iranian asylum seeker Reza Barati while in detention on Manus Island is a tragedy for his family and for all Australians. Bad laws which abandon or ignore human rights and dignity are contrary to the way we expect people to be treated in this country and by this country.
For centuries, Jews have sought refuge from persecution. We cannot deny to others the asylum we have found in Australia. It is long past time to end the unjust and brutal imprisonment of men, women and children - more than 1,000 children - seeking refuge here. This inhumane policy can only continue if good people are silent.
This issue goes to the heart of what it means to live in an ethical society.
