The UFT chapter of P.S.87 approved a Resolution to remove the TCUs (TEMPORARY CLASSROOM UNITS aka “Portables”) and replace them with a permanent building attached to the existing structure. We have seen similar models successfully implemented throughout the city. As of Nov 2015, there is no school in District 11 slotted for TCU removal.
What we want is the following:
1. X945 (TCU code for PS87 Transportable) is placed on the List of Transportable Classroom Units that Have Been Scheduled for Removal by 2019.
2. According to a 2015 NYCDOE Report on Space Overutilization, P.S.87 is 179% above Target Utilization. No rezoning was implemented in District 11. We can increase the size of our physical plant by adding a new construction that attaches to the existing structure without the repercussion of adding a UPK program.
3. Construction of a new structure added to the School Construction Authority’s FY 2020-2024 Capital Plan budget under II.A.2a. (System Expansion - New Construction-Additional Capacity-Building Additions/Modernizations)
We are now asking for your assistance in helping us to realize our vision for making P.S.87 a safe center for the residents of Wakefield. By helping us improve our physical plant, we can begin to provide adequate resources for our students, our families and the community. The Resolution and petitions attached demonstrate our united effort to make this vision a reality.
