Townsville Outriggers Home On The Strand

The Townsville Outrigger Canoe Club introduced the Sport of Outrigging to Townsville in 1990. The club has grown and developed along with the city and its people for the last 21 years and now finds itself with NO HOME on the Strand.

Over these many years the club has fostered participation and networking through sport with an emphasis on health, fitness, building self esteem, developing teamwork skills and encouraging people to become involved in their local community.

Our members conduct twice weekly lessons open to the public on Outrigger canoeing. Advertises and conducts twice yearly come and try Outrigging Open Days to encourage greater participation in Sport.

The club as a whole regularly attends public events, holds social functions for members and their families all to strengthen community involvement, social friendships, promote sport and the benefits that it provides for families and the local community.

As the sport and club has grown the need for a secure home for its members, equipment and ongoing service to the community of Townsville was identified as the greatest risk to its ongoing success.

Over the last 6 years the club has participated in numerous community surveys, attended workshops, contacted businesses and regularly highlighted with the council the need for a secure facility for the club and the sport of Outrigging in Townsville.

The club has been very fortunate to have had the support of a local resident over the last 10 years in offering his back yard as a home for the club.

Unfortunately as of the 29th January 2012 this is no longer possible and the club is faced with it greatest risk of having NO HOME to store the equipment essential to run the club.
