Lowland raised peatbogs are areas of land which contain a wide variety of animal and plant life, some of which is found only on peatbogs and is very rare. The continuing individual and industrial use of peat is destroying what little we have left of this valuable natural resource.
Some sites have been saved by government intervention but continued destruction still continues outside of SSSI (Sites of Special Scientific Interest).
There are alternatives to the use of peat, which are as cost effective as peat and as effective. More gardeners are moving to the use to peat-free alternatives. However the only way to stop the continued destruction is by banning the extraction and sale of peat in the UK.
