Poker is the world’s most popular sport and has been part of the American culture for hundreds of years. It is not going away. Arizona should embrace our rightful claim as the birthplace of modern high stakes poker and lead the way for other states to adopt similar legislation to allow for the lawful operation of small, neighborhood social poker clubs.
Prosecuting clubs just forces them to go underground where the chances of criminal behavior and influence increase. The City of Phoenix can lead the State in adopting local laws that legitimize these clubs through licensing, taxing, regulating and oversight. Rather than prosecute these social clubs, Phoenix should work with the people to create safe venues, provide jobs, increase tax revenues and allow the citizens the liberty and freedom to own and control their own local social poker clubs.
We, the people, call on the City of Phoenix Council to provide needed oversight, licensing, and help regulating the lawful operation of private social poker clubs within the City of Phoenix.
