This petition gathered a total of 2959 signatures.
Thank you to all who signed and all who assisted in the distribution of the petition. Your support has far outweighed our expectations and is extremely appreciated. It proved to be an enormously effective means of sending out a message to raise awareness of what our current legislation means and how it affects so many people.
We can only hope that we will get a positive response to our request and the request of many others who have also been lobbying Governments around Australia to have the right to request and receive a legal birth certificate for our babies born pre 20 weeks.
This petition will be tabled at the Northern Territory Parliament Sittings on Wednesday 29th October 2008. We don’t believe that this will be the end of this nightmare but certainly goes a long way to showing the politicians the type of support out there to have this legislation changed.
Future updates will be regularly posted on Kaden’s website www.kadenredriff.memory-of.com
Again, sincere thanks for all of your words of support and encouragement; it has certainly made a long battle a little easier.
Love Fiona Peters & Craig Redriff
In loving memory of our son ~Kaden~
Our angel baby ~Kaden~ was born on 26th March 2007 at approx. 17 weeks gestation. He was a fully formed baby however the current legislation doesn't allow him the right to an official Birth or Death Certificate.
The Kaden Bill was debated in the NT Parliament on 20th Feb 2008 to amend this legislation so that parents would have the right, IF THEY CHOOSE TO, to request an official Birth and Death Certificate for their baby.
The NT Government denied the Bill on the grounds that it would make the NT "at odds" with the rest of Australia and it would impact on statistics.
NO legislation around Australia allows for a Birth or Death certificate for a baby under 20 weeks, so no matter which state you live in, your baby wont be recognised under the current legislation.
Without this Birth Certificate, Kaden or any other babies born prior to 20 weeks are not acknowledged as ever existing. This has implications on future siblings who, on their birth certificate wont show them as having a brother or sister. PLEASE HELP us to change the future to ALLOW PARENTS A CHOICE should they wish to receive official acknowledgement of their precious baby.
Even if this doesn't affect you directly, please think about your sister, niece, aunt, grandchild, future wife etc. This matter deeply affects both females and males (mums and dads) of the baby who in the Government's eyes, "didn't ever exist".
This petition is by no means about changing the 20 week stance, but instead it will allow parents THE CHOICE and ability to receive a Birth and/or Death Certificate if they wish to obtain one. Please, fellow Australians, HELP US......... help the future so that our children and grand children don't need to go through the nightmare we have, and still are enduring.

We, the undersigned, request that the Australian Government, in particular the Northern Territory Government, agree to amend the current Births Deaths and Marriages legislation to include that parents are given the right to REQUEST and RECEIVE an official Birth and Death Certificate for their baby born pre 20 weeks gestation as set out in the private members bill - The Kaden Bill.
