Torbay has had an elected Mayor since 2005 after a referendum in July of that year.
Under current legislation there can not be a further referendum until July 2015, that will be two months after the Mayoral election. (There will also be an election in 2011).
This petition is simply to judge the public appetite for an earlier decision, in line with the Coalition Government's localism agenda.
We would propose that at the latest a referendum be held by the Autumn of 2014 to allow for a smooth transition between an Elected Mayor and any new system should that be the will of Torbay residents.
Please ensure you are a resident, or business owner in the Bay as postcodes will be validated.
We the undersigned, being residents of Torbay, call upon Torbay Council and the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to allow an early referendum, no later than the Autumn of 2014, to decide if Torbay the post of an elected mayor should be removed.
