Kutch, India’s largest coastal district, has a 400 km coast line bordering the Gulf of Kutch. Mainly the haven of traditional fisher people and salt farmers, the Kutch coast line is characterised by rich mangrove ecosystem, wide intertidal zone, and numerous creeks and estuaries.
Over the last five years, the Kutch coast has been witnessing a massive industrialization drive. This, along with the ensuing urbanisation, is fast changing the environmental and livelihood landscape of the coast.
Kutch Nav Nirman Abhiyan and Fisheries Management Resource Centre (FishMARC) had jointly initiated a study on the changes on the Kutch coast and their implications on the environment and livelihoods of the people. The study report can be accessed at http://masskutch.blogspot.com
We, the undersigned, have seen the Kutch study report and call on Government of India, specifically the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Ministry of Agriculture to take all necessary measures urgently to protect the environment and the traditional livelihoods of the people along the Kutch coast.
