On average over 90% of inmates across New Zealand have a diagnosable mental health disorder or suffer from a substance-use disorder. However, the state of mental health services in prisons across the country have been deemed inadequate, because the growing over population of prisons and following that lack of resources that the facilities have. Appropriate mental and physical health is a basic human right and regardless of an individual's criminal records, still the lack of services that prisons offer increases the chance of a prisoners mental health disorder because more sever if not dealt with. Changes need to be made to improve the state of mental health services in prisons, and it can start by raising awareness for this issue within our communities.
