Thank you to everyone who supported us. Sadly the students remain locked out of the budget lock up.
If you have a chance to ask a question of the Prime Minister, the Education Minister or the Minister for Employment today - please ask why do they not support freedom of the press and the education of students of journalism.
It is a sad day indeed when no one in the government will stand up and support practical education.
Open letter to :
Prime Minister the Hon Malcolm Turnbull
Minister for Education Simon Birmingham
3 May 2018
Dear Sirs
We write to you on this World Press Day and ask you to direct Treasury to allow space within the Budget lockup for student journalists to cover the Federal Budget.
This is the second year in a row that the Treasury has refused to allow students to attend, breaking a long tradition of student journalists breaking major stories of interest to youth and student audiences.
We call upon the Prime Minister and the Minister for Education to actively support journalism education and research in this country with this practical and appropriate sign of support to students in the development of skills for a profession that is central to democracy.
Signed
Alexandra Wake, Senior Lecturer RMIT University
