The Winnipeg Police Canine Unit was established in 1971 with the purchase of three German Shepherd pups. The unit has grown over the years and has become an asset to the Winnipeg Police Service in the fight against crime.
The City of Winnipeg sold the police kennel facility without notice to the members and had no plan in place to relocate the unit.
When the plans to build a state of the art police station, now known as the East District Station, were drawn, the kennels were removed from the plan to save money.
After much red tape the City of Winnipeg has agreed to provide 1.2 million dollars to the construction of a new Police K9 facility. This amount will barely build an exterior structure and will not provide for the needs of the police service dogs.
Visit their own webpage at www.winnipegpolicek9.ca or their Facebook page to read about the incredible service these dogs provide.
Support the Police Service Dogs.
We, the undersigned, call on the Mayor of Winnipeg and the Premier of Manitoba to provide adequate funding to build Police Dog Kennels for the Winnipeg Police Service K9 Unit.
