The NOTA Option
None of the Above.
Politicians understand only one language---voter rejection. They do not like that language so they have manoeuvred elections either to be non-competitive, distinctions without a difference or the lesser of the unworthiest. You stay home in order to protest and when you stay home you do not count nor can you send a message that has any effect nor can you set in motion any changes.
None of the Above that is binding on the candidates allows voters to send a message that they want change in the quality of candidates and in their way of campaigning and sends signals to more fundamental reforms such as campaign finance reforms and direct democracy reforms.
NOTA is the tool by which citizens who want change can mobilize an anonymous protest candidacy around agendas that are regularly ignored by the established politicians. The very possibility of a NOTA vote piling up will affect the behavior of the candidates. A NOTA victory jettisons the candidates.
Rock the Vote, Ca supports the NOTA Option.
Statement of Principle: All legitimate consent requires the ability to withhold consent; therefore, the legitimate consent of voters requires they be able to withhold their consent in an election to office.
Rock the Vote is dedicated to enacting Voter Consent laws, giving voters the ballot option to reject all candidates for an office and to call for a new election, with new candidates, to fill that office.
The NOTA Option
Voter Options: Vote for a candidate or "None of the Above; For a New Election". If "None of the Above; For a New Election" receives the most votes, no candidate is elected to that office and a follow-up by-election, with new candidates, is held. Note that even candidates running unopposed must obtain voter consent to be elected.
