What has always been a symbol of pride to 99% of Mohigan Alumni, the Mohigan mascot and symbol are now being ambushed by Political Correctness. There are forces that are pressuring Morgantown High School administrators to remove the Mohigan "headdress" from the mascot logo. Such an action is believed to be just the first step in destroying a proud heritage and tradition at our beloved alma mater. This letter/petition is our way of standing up and fighting for the pride we hold dear for, The Mohigan.
To the spineless, intestinal fortitude challenged wimp(s), that unilaterally decided for thousands of Morgantown High School Mohigan Alumni (which spans decades of loyal, supporting and undying spirited graduating classes):
Who do you think you are to judge for thousands of us who have worn the insignia of our beloved mascot for decades? Did you ever ONCE think that such an autonomous decision might create an undesired conflict between you and those of us who have faithfully supported the programs of our school, our student government, our various school clubs, our sports teams, our individual athletes, our cheerleaders, our bands, our faculty and staff?
As an unofficial group of proud and distressed Mohigan Alumni, we are seemingly witnessing the subtle creep of silly political correctness run amok on the banks of Decker’s Creek. While apparently a small, yet vociferous gaggle of nattering nabobs are feigning a micro-aggression about a nondescript mascot, in what appears to be a less than defined head dress of some sort. Have you people lost your minds? What has always been a symbol of pride to 99% of Mohigan Alumni, you have made into what is now a thoughtless joke by your cowardly decision to bow to a thin segment of nothing more than an unnamed group of rabble-rousers with the intent to only destroy a proud heritage and tradition at our institution.
Do not think for one second that replacing our traditional insignia, that many of us still proudly wear, with the 13th letter of the alphabet is fooling anyone. You caved-in to foolish and mercenary motive by others who do not possess, or will ever posses the pride we hold dear for The Mohigan. You may think that you have tugged the wool over our collective eyes by pulling this stunt seemingly quietly, but we will remember. Some of us have been donors. Some of us have been volunteers. We will remember with our checkbooks when the MHS Alumni Association solicits a donation, when the various school clubs and service groups come to raise funds for their causes, when you want the public to support a school event or initiative, when the band wants to go on a trip or needs new uniforms, when the sports teams need to travel, when the Homecoming festivities take place, when you need a new football field or basketball court, when the various groups participate in a parade, and when you need volunteers for any other endeavor.
We too can be very vocal and we can assure you that we will be sharing our disgust with every ear that will hear every chance we get. You see, we are not as dumb as you think.
