The world’s leading scientists say that we must begin now to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050 to turn the tide on climate change.
Elected officials from Charlottesville, Albemarle, UVa are joining with Climate Communities and ICLEI USA the week of December 8th to endorse Empowering Local Government Climate Action: Blueprint for the New President and 111th Congress. “Climate Communities and ICLEI USA are organizing city and county leaders from across America to make sure that federal decision makers understand the essential role of local governments in reducing energy use and addressing climate change,” said Roger Dickinson, Sacramento County Supervisor and Climate Communities Executive Committee member. “We look forward to working with President-elect Obama and Congress to ensure that federal policies empower local communities with the tools and resources we need to get the job done.”

Greetings President-Elect Obama,
We, the citizens of the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia are very concerned about the impact of climate change on our local community and beyond. We commend our local governments’ work to document our contributions to the world’s carbon pool and support them as they develop strategies to reduce our community’s emissions. We understand that it will take private and public efforts to grapple with this problem.
We call on your administration to provide leadership and opportunity. We look for leadership on the national level through legislative initiatives. We look for opportunity on the local level through federal funding for programs that increase energy efficiency, seed renewable energy in our community, grow public transit, and help us develop a green job corps. Local communities need your help to develop programs that collectively have national impact.
Upon taking office, we hope that you will give this urgent matter your swift attention. We hope that the bridge between a national policy on climate change and the local enactment of that policy will be built in part with funding to make real change possible.
Thank you.
