A survey released by the Foundation for Educational Choice (co-sponsored by the Nebraska Catholic Conference and the Nebraska Federation of Catholic School Parents) in September 2009 indicated that 84% of Nebraskans surveyed would opt for other-than-public education options if the means to pay for private-school education were not an issue.
A fiscal report released by the Foundation for Educational Choice in June 2010 showed that Nebraska could potentially save up to $51 million over a 10-year period by passing a tax-credit scholarship bill (analyzing LB 67, the previous tax-credit bill that was killed by the Legislature in 2010). Nebraska faces a $986 million budget shortfall for fiscal 2011-13.
Passage of this bill would enable Nebraska to help close its budget gap and save state taxpayers valuable resources. It would enable low- and middle-income parents to choose a high-quality private school for their children. It would help eliminate unacceptable achievement gaps among racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, our neighbor Iowa, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island all have tax-credit scholarship laws and they are helping thousands of children access a high-quality private school education that they do not have access to due to a lack of resources.

Let educational freedom ring for all children, including Nebraska's children!
We, the undersigned, strongly support Legislative Bill 50, the tax-credit scholarship bill introduced by Senator Bob Krist of Omaha and co-sponsored by Senator Tony Fulton of Lincoln. Recent survey responses confirm that the majority of Nebraska families want to be able to choose among high-quality schools.
Unfortunately, many families struggle to afford K-12 private school tuition for their children and the gap between private-school tuition and families' ability to pay is growing. Passage of this bill would help many families bridge this gap. When families choose privately-operated schools, publicly funded educational costs are reduced, which saves tax dollars.
Committee members, please support this bill (LB 50) and advance it to the floor of the Unicameral for debate and passage this session.
Thank you!
