At the BPS board meeting on March 3, 2009, it was announced that BPS is negotiating with the unions of both the paraeducators and secretarial staff and the paraeducators are continuing to work without a new contract. Salary cuts and benefits reductions are considered an option in the bargaining process in a district where the average paraprofessional salary is $20,000 a year.
Yet, all administrative and supervisory personnel received a contract extension and a pay increase for the next two years with no cut in benefits.
We, the undersigned, call on the Superintendent, Birmingham Board of Education and other individuals who have the power to make budget decisions, NOT to cut the salaries or benefits of paraeducators and secretarial staff at Birmingham Public Schools (Michigan).
All of our children and especially those with special needs, our most fragile of students, rely heavily on parapro staff to successfully navigate their academic days. We cannot afford to lose this supportive, caring staff.
Administrators, supervisors and other highly paid staff, at the very least, should receive pay cuts and benefit restrictions if BPS is working on reducing deficits in the district.
