Five women workers at the O'Callaghan Davenport Hotel in Dublin are on strike because the management took them off the roster for refusing to sign new contracts agreeing to a pay cut in their minimum wage rate from €8.65c an hour to €7.80c.
Other migrant workers agreed to sign new contracts, even though they were given no translations of the document into their own languages but Ingrida Balciuniene, Raisa Jonaitiene, Jolita Nalusiene, Regina Balciuniene and Greta Paskauskiene from Lithuania ands Grazyna Ziemer from Poland refused. As well as being taken off the roster they were told they would lose their jobs. Their union SIPTU served strike notice and they have picketed the Hotel since Thursday, February 17th in defence of their rights.
The Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan gave a commitment in Dail Eireann on December 9th last that no workers would be forced to sign such contracts. Tens of thousands of other workers on low pay are coming under similar pressure and if these brave women are defeated unscrupulous employers will force similar pay cuts on other vulnerable workers. Most of them women, migrants and young people.
Please sign the petition below to the Minister calling on him to honour his commitments and ensure the rights of all low paid workers are protected.
Dear Minister Lenihan,
Five women workers at the O'Callaghan Davenport Hotel in Dublin are on strike because management took them off the roster for refusing to sign new contracts agreeing to a pay cut in their minimum wage rate.
You gave a commitment in Dail Eireann on December 9th last that no workers would be forced to sign such contracts. We now call on you to honour that commitment, condemn this attack on the rights of low paid workers and ensure your colleague, Mary Hanafin, protects the rights of these vulnerable women workers and all others being coerced into signing away their rights.
