SBS plans to discontinue Yiddish and Hebrew programming during the summer. This is part of cuts across the board, including 15 other language programmes run through SBS.

The Jewish radio has long been a central component of Jewish civil society, representing a link between Jewish communities dispersed throughout the world, their mother-language and their cultural identity.

To the Special Broadcasting Service,

We the undersigned express our disappointment regarding SBS's recent decision to terminate its Yiddish and Hebrew programming over the summer break. This is the latest in a series of moves to downgrade Jewish programming and foreign-language programming across the board.

The Jewish radio has long been a central component of Jewish civil society, representing a link between Jewish communities dispersed throughout the world, their mother-language and their cultural identity.

We fully support continued and expanded foreign-language programming for communities with greater listening audiences than our own. However, this need not be at the cost of minority language programming. In keeping with its mission statement, SBS ought "to provide multilingual and multicultural radio and television services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians." Australia's multicultural make-up can only be preserved if all its diverse cultures are nurtured.

We the undersigned call upon
a) SBS to reconsider its decision, and continue Yiddish and Hebrew programming during the summer and for years to come
b) SBS to support minority language programming for all Australians
c) The Department of Immigration and Citizenship to adequately fund initiatives that truly foster multiculturalism
