The 2016 national elections revealed the lack of commitment the two major parties have to the interests, issues and agendas of the Black, Latino and working class communities.
Historically the Democratic party has taken the Black and Latino vote for granted and despite our strong support of its candidates, it has made no serious attempt to address the economic, social justice, employment, education and political issues of our communities.
While the Republican party has been hostile to the issues facing nonwhite and working class communities, the election of Donald Trump with his white nationalist, reactionary and pro-big business agenda threaten to speed up the marginalization of Black, Brown and working class communities.
More than ever, communities not served by the two major parties need to organize themselves locally to create networks to fight for our economic, social and political rights.
We must continue to develop independent action fighting to end police brutality, eliminate unemployment, improve education, end judicial abuse and the school to prison pipeline.
We need a Black worker led-electoral party that will function as a state-wide network for workers, community activists, students, organizers and parents working together around a unifying social and economic justice platform.
We, the undersigned residents of Maryland, support the organization of an independent political party created by the Black working class community to fight for social and economic justice for Black, Brown and working class people statewide. This party will be known as the Ujima People's Progress Party and will stand for independent Black political action all year round.
