The San Diego City Council will soon consider how to effectively regulate short-term rentals (STRs) in the city. City Councilman Chris Cate has proposed a framework that would preserve the valuable benefits of STRs for homeowners, travelers, and the citizens of San Diego, while implementing proven measures to improve compliance among the actors who participate in the STR market.
All forms of STRs serve an important function in our city, positively impacting homeowners, local businesses and communities, and traveler choice. In particular, vacation and whole home rentals allow families traveling together to have communal space to cook, eat, and gather in a home that is not occupied by the owner. Visitors often come to San Diego to attend weddings, celebrate births, or attend graduations. These visitors frequent local restaurants, shops, and boutiques, increasing spending in the local economy and supporting jobs.
While all STRs support the San Diego economy, regulations that unfairly penalize vacation rentals should be avoided. Vacation and whole home rentals are well maintained and their owners/managers employ local citizens who are hired for cleaning, landscaping, painting, and contracting.
Smart, equitable rules for STRs can ensure these travel options are appropriately regulated, raise tax revenue for the city, and benefit all of San Diego. Councilman Cate's approach will keep San Diego's tourism industry thriving. Please offer your support by signing our petition!
We, the undersigned, call on the San Diego City Council to support Councilman Chris Cate's short-term rental regulatory framework that protects both homeowners' property rights and the valuable economic activity that these rentals bring to our communities throughout the city.
