The current dispute between management and staff at the University of the Witwatersrand regarding salary increases, is symbolic of a lack of real communication between management and staff and indicative of the disdain with which management appears to regard staff concerns.
Within this context, students seem to have more rights than staff. It is time for greater staff representivity at Wits and for management to show a genuine commitment to the human resources and capacity within the University.
We, the undersigned, call on Senior Managers and Administrators at the University of the Witwatersrand to formally creatre an institutionally supported open forum for staff concerns and suggestions for improvement.
We further call on the Vice Chancellor and Principal to motivate on the behalf of the University and its staff for the creation of an office of a DVC which will be committed to staff concerns and issues.
