According to the U.S. government-sponsored website
StopBullying.gov, state and local lawmakers have taken action to prevent bullying and protect children in schools. But what about beyond the schoolyard? At present, no state law directly addresses bullying in the workplace.
Workplace bullying refers to repeated, abusive actions of individuals directed toward an employee which are intended to intimidate, degrade, humiliate or undermine the employee.
Unwarranted or invalid criticism and exclusion or deliberate social isolation of the targeted employee is an example of bullying. Bullying can take place at work or more commonly nowadays through social media.
Every company, large and small, should create and enforce policy prohibiting harassment and bullying in the workplace.
Companies should implement training for staff and management on identifying and addressing harassment.
Companies should provide grievance procedures for employees to file harassment/bullying complaints.
