I understand the importance of protecting workers that are working on expressways, and highways. I have no problems with fines, penalties and tickets for such. Because we should drive carefully when these workers are present and working on making the expressway/highway a more safer place for us to travel on.
Nearly all states have laws that increase the penalties for speeding or committing other traffic violations while in a construction work zone.
In many states, the enhanced penalty is applicable only when workers are present and/or if signs are posted.
Examples:
24 states and the District of Columbia require workers to be present in the construction zone for the increased penalties to take effect. Illinois is not listed as having workers be present.
We, the undersigned, ask that the law be amended for the state of Illinois to require workers to be present for work zone violation tickets to be issued.
We feel that it is very important to protect these workers, but that there should not be a ticket issued when workers are not present and working this gives the feeling of a sinkhole system on the expressways/highways giving the affect that construction would never end as the money generated from these tickets would justify the construction from painting a lane to moving a sign.
We, feel that the state of Illinois is taking advantage of this State Work Zone Traffic Law.
We have not gotten up to date information on fatalities and or injuries since 2009.
We, implore you to take a look at this current law and make changes.
Thank You
