It has come to light that many schools and chain restaurants, including Pizza Express, Subway, KFC and most large restaurant chains are selling Halal meat without telling the customer nor giving any choice to those who object on moral grounds.
Halal meat is cheaper to produce and because Halal abattoirs can be registered charities they pay no tax or VAT. They are commercial enterprises and should not be allowed charitable status when selling to the open market. This is unfair competition.
The Halal Food Authority estimates that around 25% of meat sold in the UK is Halal, whereas only 5% of the population is Muslim, therefore most Halal meat is sold to non-Muslims.
To the Honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled.
The Humble petition of Steven Ronald Trigg of Littlehampton, citizen and resident of the United Kingdom declares that:
Halal and Kosher meat should not be sold on the open market, nor provided in restaurants unless clearly stated and kept separate from non-Halal/Kosher meat.
The reason for this is that a great many non-Muslims/Jews object to eating Halal meat on moral grounds. The only reason that the inhumane method of slaughter carried out by Halal and Kosher abattoirs is allowed is because Muslims and Jews require it under their religious laws. It is therefore logical that only Muslims and Jews should be able to buy it. Non-Muslims/Jews have the right to choose humanely slaughtered meat and have the right to know positively that such meat is not Halal/Kosher. In a multi-cultural society all citizens must have the right to be represented.
The petitioner therefore requests that the House of Commons pass laws to the following end:
i) Only duly licensed retail outlets may sell Halal/Kosher meat to the public, such outlets to show clearly that they are so licensed and that, if selling other meats, such meat should be kept separate in such a way as to avoid cross contamination. Furthermore, all Halal/Kosher meat should be clearly labelled if pre-packaged.
ii) Only duly licensed restaurants may serve Halal/Kosher meat, and such restaurants must:
a) Show clearly on their menus that Halal/Kosher meat is sold;
b) Keep Halal/Kosher meat separate from non-Halal/Kosher meat, such separation to be controlled in a similar fashion to the controls involved in separating organic produce.
iii) Hospitals, schools and other government organisations should follow the same rules as restaurants and must offer a non-Halal/Kosher alternative meat;
iv) Halal abattoirs should not be allowed charity status on the grounds that they are commercial organisations.
