Laws need to be passed to prohibit employers from turning someone away for work , solely on the basis of background.
Jobs are a way a person can better themselves and feel better about their position in society. It is a step in the right direction even for someone who has not always made the right decisions in the past.
When a person commits a crime there is a judicial process put in place to punish that individual. A judge then decides what the punishment should be and the offender submits to the consequences.
For an employer (who is not a judge) to keep the punishment going by refusing work (to someone who has served their time) is essentially undermining the judicial system. If you take person's way of survival away, what more do they have to result to?
We, the undersigned, call on the Iowa Legislator to pass a law protecting those who have served their time for their offences from being brought under further scrutiny from employers by being refused work solely on the basis of their criminal background.
