There is a current proposal to build a waste recycling and incineration plant, extending to some 29 hectares or over 71 acres (which is over 3 times the size of the floor space of the millennium dome!).
According to reports in the Glasgow Herald (see the editions from 22nd and 23rd Dec 2010), this plant will be capable of handling 1.5 million tonnes of raw waste a year! To put this into perspective, SEPA report that the municipal solid waste collected in East Renfrewshire in 2007-08 was only 55,883 tonnes!
I am fighting to stop Eastwood becoming the ash tray of the west of Scotland, and I ask you to join with me in opposing this proposal.
I recently lodged a parliamentary motion on the subject, below:
S3M-07759 Jackson Carlaw MSP
(Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party):
Proposed Waste Incineration Plant at Loganswell— That the Parliament expresses its concern in respect of the proposal to establish a waste incineration plant at Loganswell near Newton Mearns in Eastwood covering some 29 hectares and which is anticipated to burn some 1.5 million tonnes of raw waste a year, a proposal which would arguably turn Eastwood into the ashtray of the west of Scotland; further notes the evidence of Duncan McLaren of Friends of the Earth Scotland who advised the Transport Infrastructure and Climate Change Committee on 23 November 2010 that it “would be insane to build Europe’s largest incinerator in East Renfrewshire”; believes that an urgent rethink of this project is essential, and urges the Scottish Government to demonstrate its support for the wider local community, which it considers is resolutely opposed to this proposed development.

Many congratulations to the 2000+ residents who marched in protest to LRVs proposals.
With the formal planning permission to be lodged in the New Year, it is vital for residents to continue their protest and lodge their complaints and opposition against this scar on the landscape and prevent Eastwood from becoming the ashtray of the West of Scotland.

I object to the plans for Europe's largest waste recycling and incineration plant to be sited in Newton Mearns, in Eastwood.
