We, the undersigned University of Texas at Austin students, are concerned about the availability of campus parking for our academic needs.
There are 14,000 parking spaces for 70,000 students, faculty, and staff who pay for parking permits. However, according to the University of Texas Parking and Transportation Services policy, when there is an event on campus, certain commuter student parking lots can be closed and the general public pays to park in remaining student parking, which severely limits parking for students attending class.
We understand that UT is trying to fully capitalize on events, but they must not forget the nearly $7 million already brought in due to yearly parking permits. We also understand that PTS gives parking permit holders notice via email of possible transportation concerns before an event. However, there are 8 parking garages located throughout campus that the public can pay to use instead of taking spaces that students have paid for.
We, the undersigned, would like PTS to change campus parking policies so that students’ parking needs come before those of the general public.
