Centenary College may have violated several FCC laws by shutting down their community based public radio station, 91.9FM WNTI, and selling the broadcast license to an NPR affiliate who will use it to rebroadcast, or "piggyback," the signal from the station.
The various laws that may have broken include public notices in print media and on air, 30 day FCC notification, required public hearings and a public comment period. Centenary College did not do any of these things. Without any notification to the on air staff or the public, Centenary made this decision and cut off the live broadcasts at the flip of a switch, in the middle of the night, to the shock and dismay of the community they serve.
WNTI is the vital, thriving, living heart of a large terrestrial based community in northwestern New Jersey that will not be let go without a fight.
We, the undersigned, hereby petition the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to reject and deny the transfer or sale of the broadcast license of radio station WNTI 91.9 FM by Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ to any entity.
The community has supported this station directly for many years with generous donations to cover operating expenses. The FM live broadcast station is the heart of a thriving community that will suffer greatly by the proposed sale and/or transfer of the station's broadcasting license. The success or failure of many non-profit organizations as well as area businesses is immeasurably dependent upon WNTI's survival as a local live broadcast radio station.
Centenary College may have violated several FCC laws by engaging in this transfer process without adhering to the legal requirements set forth by the FCC. No public commentary was taken, no public hearing was held, and no notification was made in any form in print media nor on air.
To put it in plain English, the community wants their radio station back, and we ask the FCC to stop the proposed sale and/or transfer of this broadcasting license.
