Granton-sur-Mer: A Community Regeneration Project.
The City of Edinburgh Council proposes to sell a major community land asset in North Edinburgh called the Walled Garden to a residential care home provider for a meagre one-off capital receipt of £1m. This capital receipt will not even cover the City of Edinburgh cost of buying the site and obtaining a planning permission and 6 years of security to keep the public OUT of a green community asset. All assets of the City are owned by its residents.
We Granton-sur-Mer are not opposed to the provision of a "care home" within the Waterfront regeneration, however to LOSE such a valuable green space as identified in the Master Plan would be a sad loss to the Community including any future "care home". Green space is at premium in new development today.
There are many other available sites within the area for such provision more closely associated to the necessary amenities for care provision.
The Granton-sur-Mer project will provide an International Garden Festival, an artisans village of up to 200 work spaces and finally an outdoor Seafront LIDO. Surely a project which year on year contributes to the local economy can only be better than a care home?
We the JUMP group Joined Up Master Planning want the Council to "gift" the land to the community so we can build the project called Granton sur Mer. This project will provide 200 full time sustainable jobs 50 part time jobs 250,000 visitors to the area all producing economic and social benefit to the North Edinburgh economy. An income will also be produced of £500,000 per annum to be put back into the local economy through further regeneration projects.
Please sign this petition for a real opportunity to realise a major City and National Community Regeneration Project.
We, the undersigned call upon the City of Edinburgh Council not to sell The Walled Garden and associated land to a care home provider.
We further request that the Council gift to the Granton sur Mer Community Regeneration project the Walled Garden and associated lands for them to provide the community with a major job creating and income generating community led and realised project.
