#Roads & Transport
Target:
Waipa District Council, NZTA and Fulton Hogan
Region:
New Zealand

Introduction:
We, the residents and concerned members of the Ohaupo Community, strongly oppose the reinstallation of speed bumps during the scheduled road resurfacing on 7th January 2025.

The Issue:
Speed bumps in Ohaupo Village have caused significant inconvenience to residents, visitors, and road users, including increased vehicle wear and tear, disrupted traffic flow, and potential delays for emergency services. The issue is further compounded by the high volume of heavy vehicles such as trucks, stock trucks, and horse floats that regularly travel through our village. Speed bumps create unnecessary challenges for these vehicles, leading to noise, inefficiencies, and additional safety concerns.

Our Goal:
We call on the Waipa District Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to reconsider the plan to reinstall speed bumps during the road resurfacing and explore alternative traffic-calming measures that are more effective and less disruptive.

Proposed Solution:
Instead of speed bumps, we advocate for solutions such as:

Improved road signage and clearer speed limit markings.
Electronic speed monitoring devices with feedback displays for drivers.
Increased enforcement of speed limits and driver education campaigns.

Why This Matters:
Ohaupo Village is a vibrant and growing community situated along a busy State Highway that accommodates not just local traffic but also heavy vehicles such as stock trucks, horse floats, and transport trucks. The reinstallation of speed bumps will exacerbate noise, disrupt traffic flow, and negatively impact residents, businesses, and road users. It is critical that the Waipa District Council and NZTA engage with the community to implement better solutions that address safety concerns without compromising daily life.

Call to Action:
We, the undersigned, urge the Waipa District Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to stop the reinstallation of speed bumps in Ohaupo Village during the January 2025 road resurfacing project. Instead, we request that alternative, community-friendly traffic-calming measures be considered to address safety concerns without causing undue disruption.
