Stop the Personal Vehicle Tax!
On September 1st, 2008, the City’s new Personal Vehicle Tax (PVT) came into effect pursuant to the City of Toronto By-law No. 625-2008. The tax is $60 for a passenger vehicle or light commercial vehicle registered for personal use and $30 for a motorcycle or moped. People with a TORONTO address will pay the PVT at the time of licence plate validation renewal. The PVT MUST be paid in order to renew your licence.
When calling to inquire with the city to find out the purpose of this new tax, Councillor Howard Moscoe's office stated, "It's for road repairs and other things that the city needs." Our taxes already pay for road repairs so what exactly is included in "other things"?
This is an unfair tax placed upon the people of Toronto. We need to stop the unnecessary taxation that our city consistently puts on its citizens.
We ask that this issue be put to a vote by each registered citizen of this city, and its results be final as a decision by the people for the people.
We ask that no other filing or pleading be attached to our petition, and that it be voted on by its own merit, and if the vote is in favor of our petition, that the Personal Vehicle Tax be eliminated permanently with no new tax being created in its replacement.
We, the undersigned, call on the CITY OF TORONTO, to put an end to the PVT that is charged on each driver, in the city of TORONTO. Your petitioners call upon the City to oppose “City of Toronto By-law No. 625-2008".
