A plan to use Stowey Quarry in the Chew Valley as a landfill site for up to 645,000 tonnes of asbestos has been approved by Bath and North East Somerset Council, despite objections from Bristol Water and three local parishes.

The quarry sits on top of a hill with nearby streams feeding into the Chew Valley Lake, a reservoir providing 50 million litres of water a day to Bristol and the surrounding area. Given the position of the site we believe that the risk of asbestos being released into the air or of contamination of local water sources through effluent escaping in to the ground is unacceptable.

We also believe that the planning application procedure was flawed in that it failed to consult the public properly, the planning committee was misled and that the Environmental Impact Assessment (produced on behalf of the applicant) was inaccurate and misleading.

We, the undersigned, call on BANES to revoke the permission given to use Stowey Quarry to dump asbestos.
