Older Disney films consciously and proudly depicted stereotypes that dehumanized people of color. But this is all in the past, right? No! Disney’s racist past still haunts their current movies.
In The Princess and the Frog (2009), the first and only Disney movie with a black protagonist, the main character transforms into an animal. In Pixar’s film, Soul (2020), which will be the first Pixar film with a black protagonist, the main character turns into a “soul,” presumably for the majority of the film. In the only two Disney movies with a black protagonist, the main character transforms into something non-human. So how is Disney representing people of color if their characters are unrecognizable as humans for the majority of their development?
We, the undersigned, call on the Disney to make a film, where black protagonist won’t be transformed into something non-human or where white protagonist will be transformed into something non-human.
