Dr. Kevin Baxter, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, has mandated a change for all local Catholic schools' calendars.
The current calendar of 180 days will be extended to 200 days, effective this year for 70 percent of Catholic schools. Dr. Baxter failed to follow WCEA guidelines that state clearly that parents are the primary educators of children, and parents are partners in educating their children alongside the school. Instead, parents received a unilateral proclamation without any ability to protest or offer feedback.
Dr. Baxter has clearly stated that surveys were inappropriate because parents are not surveyed in these matters. This is a fundamental change to the quality of life of the children of Catholic schools, who will now lose a third of their summer vacation and be forced to forgo many of the pleasures of summer they have always enjoyed, such as bonding time with friends and family, trips to visit extended family, and enrichment opportunities of the parents choosing.
We, the undersigned, call on Dr. Kevin Baxter, the Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, to refrain from adding 20 days to the Catholic school calendar.
We call on the Archdiocese to enter dialogue with parents to determine the needs of each parish on an individual level before mandating a major change in the lives of the students such as adding an entire month of school.
Furthermore, we call on the Archdiocese to refrain from making administrative decisions without seeking the counsel of parents in matters where significant increase in financial collection is necessary.
