1. At Moody Bible Institute, faculty and upper-level administration are predominantly male and white.
a. In 2017, females comprised approximately 25% of the full-time teaching faculty
(for the undergraduate school and graduate schools, Chicago).
b. In the current academic year (2017/18), the gender composition of Moody’s
Chicago campus will drop to approximately 23% female for full-time teaching faculty.
2. By fall 2018, Moody will have three academic programs—Bible, Theology, and Sports Ministry—with zero full-time female faculty instructing.
3. Moody has zero female deans (out of approximately 20+ deans).
4. In 2017, Moody fired a female Communications professor, Janay Garrick, who opposed Moody’s discriminatory treatment of females and LGBT.
a. In 2016, Professor Garrick assisted a female student in making a Title IX
complaint against the school, but then Moody fired her.
5. LGBT students report experiences of exclusion (“You can’t be gay and saved”), mistreatment, shunning, and expulsion at Moody.
6. Many female students have reported cases of discrimination, harassment, and exclusion due to their gender on Moody’s campus.
7. Many female students have reported charges of violence against women including, but not limited to, sexual assault and rape on Moody’s campus. These charges have been largely mishandled, unreported, and/or un-adjudicated by Moody’s Office of the Dean of Student Life and the Title IX Office.
8. Since 2012, Moody has accepted approximately $24 million in federal funding making them accountable to federal non-discrimination laws.
In February 2017, at Moody’s Founder’s Week, male students (in protest) organized a walkout when a female speaker took the stage. In response, one of Moody’s long-time, revered male professors stated at a Chicago faculty meeting:
“I think it’s time we addressed the misogyny and sexism at this institution.”
The undersigned to this petition believe that it’s time, too. Time’s Up.
We, the undersigned, call on Moody Bible Institute to:
(1) Hire the organization, G.R.A.C.E. (which stands for: Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment), or an equivalent organization, to conduct an independent investigation into the institutional response to all known and/or reported gender discrimination and sexual assault-related student cases over the past 30 years by the offices mandated to protect students. These offices include, but are not limited to: (a) the Office of the Dean of Student Life, and (b) the Title IX Office (instituted in 2012).
(2) Set up a Safe Hotline (phone and online) where students can anonymously report cases of gender discrimination, sex discrimination, and sex-based assault, rape, etc.
(3) Set up a scholarship fund to annually provide two female students with full scholarships (tuition, housing, food, etc.). The scholarship fund will distribute scholarships for the next 40 years in the following male-dominated academic programs:
a. Theology,
b. Bible, and
c. Pastoral Ministry.
(4) Hire at least three full-time female faculty to teach in the Theology Program.
(5) Hire at least three full-time female faculty to teach in the Bible Program.
