Planning committees in Wales are democratically elected and answerable to the communities that elect them. The Planning Inspectorate is not - it is an independent unelected body with huge influence over planning policy in Wales, including fracking. It answers only to the UK Government and Welsh Government.
In 2014, a democratic decision to refuse planning for a test drill site at Borras near Wrexham resulted in the unelected Planning Inspectorate overturning the decision. Yet there is no right of appeal for communities blighted by fracking and unconventional gas exploration.
We, the undersigned, call for the Planning Inspectorate to be answerable to the communities affected by its decisions.
