The Tuscarora Township Downtown Development Association plans to add several more “pods” of reverse-angle parking, AKA back-in parking, on the northbound side of South Straits highway in downtown Indian River as part of the proposed Streetscape.
The existing back-in parking in front of the Chamber of Commerce has proven to be inconvenient, difficult to use, and especially unsafe and confusing for visitors to Indian River.
Further development of this design concept will also require additional center line shifts of 2 feet or possibly more leaving Indian River’s main street with narrowed travel lanes and no proven net gain in parking spaces.
The Cheboygan County Road Commission has scheduled a public hearing on reverse angle parking for Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 6:30 PM at the CCRC office at 5302 South Straits Hwy, Indian River.
As a resident, business owner, visitor, or shopper in Indian River, we the undersigned protest and oppose the use of back-in angle parking on South Straits highway in Indian River. This road is a heavily traveled county primary road and signaling, stopping, and attempting to back up in a travel lane is awkward and unsafe.
We encourage the Cheboygan County Road Commission to request the Tuscarora Township Downtown Development Association revise the proposed streetscape plans, eliminating back-in angle parking.
We further encourage improving existing off-street parking and maximizing on-street parallel parking that can also accommodate RV’s and vehicles pulling boats and recreational trailers.
