Christmas Eve is not a Statutory holiday in Canada. We are among the provinces that have the least amount of holidays.
It's time that we take the lead, with a new holiday created to give families more time to be together over the holidays.
Number of Statutory Holidays by Province/Territory:
Alberta: 5 National + 4 Provincial + 2 Optional Holidays
British Columbia: 5 National + 4 Provincial
Manitoba: 5 National + 3 Provincial + 2 Optional Holidays
New Brunswick: 5 National + 5 Provincial
Newfoundland: 5 National + 1 Provincial + 4 Provincial Government Holidays
Northwest Territories: 5 National + 5 Territorial
Nova Scotia: 5 National + 1 Provincial + Natal Day (though it is not a Stat Holiday, but a common day off)
Nunavut: 5 National + 1 Territorial
Ontario: 5 National + 4 Provincial + 1 Common Municipal Holiday
Prince Edward Island: 5 National + 2 Provincial
Quebec: 5 National + 3 Provincial
Saskatchewan: 5 National + 5 Provincial
Yukon: 5 National + 4 Territorial

We, the undersigned, call on the Nova Scotia government to legislate December 24th as a Statutory Holiday in Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotia is behind some of the provinces in Canada, that legislate ten holidays. It's time, we have another holiday to show appreciation to our workers who provide hard work for companies in our province.
Workers contribute by paying taxes on our roads and to the health care system etc.
Leading up to Christmas, people are tired from shopping, workers barely get to enjoy Christmas day and boxing day to be off with their families. How often have you heard from someone tell you about all this work they had to do and only have 2 days off. We have a chance to rectify it by legislating a three day break, instead of two.
With this proposed holiday, workers will have a three day well deserved break. A happy employee equals a productive employee. Holidays will help encourage other people to want to come and move here to our province, so let's make it happen.
Restaurant workers, call center, coffee shop, movie theater employees and other non essential services are never closed on holidays. With this proposed holiday, we request that these non essential services to be included for this holiday and the Retail Business Uniform Closing Day Act to be amended to make this happen. Playing one occupation off against another is wrong. Let's include other non essential services for this holiday. An example of this happened quite often in the Sunday shopping debate. Trying to make people feel guilty because other people work on Sundays, in essential and non essential services, who chose that profession . So let's give these workers the holiday as well, instead of divide and conquer, turning one occupation off against another.
Let's set an example to the rest of the country and be leaders instead of followers. The argument that will be used by business " the 24th is our busiest day". If a law is legislated, the 23rd of December will be that busiest day. Other workers work half the day , while others have it off. Retail workers and all other
non essential services work til the last bang.
Let's give Nova Scotians a Christmas that we really deserve.
