Let’s Make Online Safety Inclusive for Everyone
The Online Safety Act 2025 is a huge step forward in keeping people safe online, something we fully support. But the way age checks are currently designed could unintentionally shut out people with learning disabilities and autism from safe spaces like Big Life Adventure.
Many of our community don’t have passports or driving licences. Biometric tools often misjudge people with Down’s Syndrome or Autism. And for some, the process itself can feel confusing or overwhelming. These barriers risk excluding people from the very platforms created to support and protect them.
At Big Life Adventure, we’ve already gone above and beyond to keep our community safe, with tools like Big Life Buddy, our inbuilt AI safeguarding system. The only hurdle left is finding an age verification method that is fair, accessible, and inclusive.
We, the undersigned, urge Ofcom and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to:
- Recognise the barriers faced by disabled users
- Allow alternative, accessible age checks
- Work with disability organisations to co-design solutions that include everyone
The Online Safety Act should protect us all, not leave anyone behind.
