Young students (4-5 year olds) are coming from classes of 10 students/teacher in preschool to double the student to teacher ratio in P1 at Harrington Sound Primary School (HSPS). P1 is the beginning of their academic careers. It is the foundation year where they will learn to read, write, begin math, and all other subjects. Our children deserve the attention of their teacher and should NOT have to compete with 19 or more other children in their first year at HSPS. They are still very young and new to the new teaching style of "Big Boy or Girl School". P1 is way more structured learning and much less playtime. Children are very easily distracted, especially by other children. Imagine how distracted they will be with so many more children around them in a small classroom! According to studies such as Project STAR and a 1999 analysis of Israeli schools by economists Joshua Angrist and Victor Lavy, both show a positive effect from smaller class sizes in the first few years of school.
Elliott Primary school will not even have a P1 class at all in September 2019.
Francis Patton will only have 1 class and HSPS will have 2 very full classes. What happened to the other schools' P1 Teachers? I believe it would make sense to create a 3rd stream at HSPS, bring in another teacher, and divide the 40+ students now registered into 3 classes. Thus lowering the student to teacher ratios and alleviating some of the stress of having so many YOUNG students for one teacher. We are parents that want the best for our children. We are parents of 1, 2, 3 or more children. We know that raising children is HARD. Now imagine being the teacher of 20 or more children trying to instill in them knowledge and skills that they will need for the rest of their lives. Can you imagine their stress? Our children and our teachers deserve more than that. Please help try to make this change by signing our petition. Our children and teachers will appreciate and benefit infinitely from smaller class sizes. Thank you!!!
We the undersigned call on the Ministry of Education as well as the Harrington Sound Primary School Authorities to lower the student to teacher ratio of P1 by bringing in another qualified teacher and spreading the 40+ registered students amongst 3 teachers rather than just 2.
