Sadly, there aren’t enough allotments in Nottingham to meet demand, so please sign our petition and help us convince Nottingham City Council that there should be a community allotment celebrating Caribbean history, heritage and culture in the city – for everyone to enjoy.
Our community allotment will be an urban museum plot – mapping the history and heritage of Caribbean life in Nottingham and the UK through beautiful Caribbean plants and tasty vegetables and herbs.
SKN Heritage Museum is more than just a museum – we’re a unique, vibrant, creative organisation dedicated to commemorating and celebrating the Caribbean contribution to life in Nottingham and the UK.
We’re a museum without walls, well-known for our unusual, thought-provoking pop-up exhibitions and events featuring social histories, moving personal accounts, intriguing objects and unexpected twists, like our recent Edible Exhibition to Takeaway.
Now, with your help, we want to start a community allotment for Nottingham, open to individuals and groups of all ages, ethnicities and abilities.
Allotments provide a huge range of benefits to the community and the environment, combining physical activity with social interaction, learning new skills, recycling and growing your own healthy, fresh, local food.

The whole community will be welcome to help us develop and grow Nottingham’s new Caribbean allotment, and we’ll also share the harvest with those who need it most.
The allotment will also provide opportunities for the community to come together and learn exciting new skills, while enjoying the fresh air and learning about one another’s culture and experiences.
Through the project, we will capture people’s social histories and a wealth of knowledge about ‘growing your own’ Caribbean style – from traditional tips and techniques, to more modern methods. It will also be a place for people to enjoy fun workshops and activities, or just come along to join in for a while and make new friends.
You don’t need any previous experience of gardening to join in, so whether you love horticulture, growing your own, cooking, history and heritage, being outdoors, socialising or just having a good time – why not get involved?
Please sign our petition and help us launch a Caribbean community allotment in Nottingham - our project will make a lasting difference to both the local environment and people’s lives.
History and heritage isn’t only found in the pages of a book or in a museum, it’s about our lives, the things we do every day, the objects we use and treasure, the traditions and values we hold dear and the stories we tell. We unearth all those things, from the day-to-day, to the rituals and curious customs little is known about, revealing why they’re important in order to shine a light on our shared social history and culture.
Having a community allotment would be a perfect way to continue this work and reach new people, we require 15,000 signatures to support this worthy cause, so please sign.
Many thanks,
Catherine Ross and the SKN Team
