The area under the Ben White / 71 has become a tent city. It is full of garbage, rodents and human waste (literally). Not only is this very foul to look at, but is increasingly unsanitary. The city recently built a “park-n-ride” lot across the street from the proposed area. The idea is a Skate/BMX park built in this area would solve multiple issues. First of all it would give athletes and kids a place to play and practice their skills, which is desperately needed in Austin. 2 parks for 1 million people simply isn’t enough. The current parks are badly overcrowded and becoming dangerous because of the amount of people trying to use them. Secondly, the area would be cleaned up and maintained by the community. This would solve the issue of the garbage and waste u see there now. Again, use the example of the “park-n-ride” across the street. Lastly, this area could be used as a community gathering area. In other words, events and fundraisers could be regularly held there. Contests and events could raise money for the facility and the City of Austin.
Austin wants to be a progressive, global city. But, we only have 2 sanctioned Skateparks. We host events such as SXSW, F1 and many others. How do we only have 2 Skateparks?
We, the undersigned, call on the City of Austin and TXDOT to add a SKATEPARK and BMX facility to the plans to clean up the area under the bridges. Create a place for all ages to exercise and practice their skills while keeping them safe and not harming public areas. Also clean out the area under 71 as it is unsanitary and unsightly.
